Who we are

Vancouver Island Voices for Eating Disorders Society is a registered non-profit Society in the province of British Columbia, Canada.

Our website address is: https://vancouverislandvoicesforeatingdisorders.com. We also own a shorter domain that redirects to this site: http://www.vivedsociety.ca/.

We are committed to respecting your privacy and any personal information you share with us through our website, contact forms, email lists, and support activities.

What information we collect

When you use our website or contact us, we may collect:

  • Your name and the contact information you provide through a web form or email.
  • Basic usage data without personal identifying details such as the pages you visited and general location through standard website analytics.
  • Any information you voluntarily disclose and give consent to use when you ask for information, provide feedback, or sign up for an event.

We do not collect or store personal information beyond what you choose to share in public spaces such as blogs, comments, or open forums. Please be mindful not to share private health information or other sensitive personal details.

How we use your information

We may use your information to:

  • Respond to your inquiries or support requests.
  • To send periodic updates, event announcements, or newsletters if you subscribed.
  • Improve our website, content, and services based on general usage patterns.
  • Support safe, respectful community spaces, including moderating public comments or posts where necessary.

Who we share your data with

Your comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

We will never sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Leaving a comment

When visitors leave comments, we collect the data shown in the comments form including your IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Uploading media to the website

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Anyone can extract this location data by downloading the image.

Embedded content from other websites

Posts or articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behave as if you directly clicked a link to view that content in the external website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content. If you have an account with that website and are logged in to that website, it may also track your interaction with the embedded content.

We will ask our blog contributors to provide a notice at the top of posts or articles that use embedded content but we cannot guarantee that all authors will comply.

How cookies are used on our site

We may use web analytic tools and basic cookies to understand how visitors use the site and to improve site performance. You can adjust your browser settings to manage or block cookies, but some features may not work as expected.

If you leave a comment, you may opt-in to save your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you leave another comment without having to fill in your details again. These cookies will expire in one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies expire in two days, and screen options cookies expire in a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you are a contributor and edit or publish a post or article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply remembers the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

You can manually delete any cookie through your browser privacy settings at any time.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For registered users, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

You can choose to:

  • Decline to share specific details or use an alias. Some features may not be available without basic information.
  • Unsubscribe from email lists at any time using the unsubscribe link in our newsletters.

If you have an account on this site or left a comment, you can:

  • Request a correction of your personal data.
  • Request to receive an exported file of your personal data.
  • Request that we erase your personal data, not including any we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

You can submit your request by sending an email or through our contact form.

Protecting your privacy

We take reasonable steps to protect your information from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. However, no online system is 100% secure. By using our website, you accept that risk and take precautions.

We recommend that you use privacy tools and practice healthy digital habits to safeguard your personal information. See Privacy Guides to learn more.
